90s Zine-Making Workshop

90s Zine-Making Workshop: Step away from the screen and return to the DIY culture of handmade zines.
About the 90s Zine-Making workshop
Zines are small, self-published magazines made by enthusiasts outside official media. In Lithuania they began appearing in the late 1980s and boomed between 1990 and 2004, made by punks, metalheads, sci-fi fans, football supporters and other subcultures. This hands-on workshop brings that DIY spirit back: instead of fan, we make it about fun. Participants work as an editorial team, from choosing a name to cutting, pasting and copying their own zine.
This workshop consists of three parts:
- 01
A short history of zines
A look at fanzine culture in Lithuania and beyond: who made them, why, and how they spread ideas independently of official media.
- 02
Make your spread
Together, participants choose a name and a theme for the zine. Then everyone creates their own individual spread, using collage, a typewriter, the photocopier, glue and anything else at hand.
- 03
Lay out and print
All the spreads are laid out, arranged and planned into one zine, which is then printed, so everyone leaves with their own copy.
This workshop invites participants to step away from their screens and return to the DIY culture of zines, where everything is made by hand.
